Description

The Ochsenbein Periodontal Chisel Fig. 4 is a double-ended periodontal surgical instrument designed for controlled bone reshaping and removal of bone during periodontal and oral surgical procedures. The supplied image shows the characteristic Ochsenbein chisel configuration, with angled working blades positioned at opposite ends of the instrument. The catalogue/model number is MMI-64-123.

The Fig. 4 design provides two working ends with opposing orientations, allowing the operator to select the appropriate blade according to the surgical area and direction of access. The narrow chisel blades are connected to slender shafts and a cylindrical knurled handle.

The textured handle provides a secure gripping surface for controlled manual manipulation. Manufactured from Surgical Grade Stainless Steel, the instrument is suitable for repeated professional dental use and routine autoclave sterilization.

To maintain the performance, appearance, and service life of your stainless steel dental and surgical instruments, follow these care guidelines:

  • Clean instruments immediately after use to prevent blood, tissue, or debris from drying on the surface.
  • Wash using a neutral pH enzymatic detergent and a soft nylon brush. Avoid abrasive pads, steel wool, or harsh chemicals.
  • Rinse thoroughly with distilled or demineralized water to minimize mineral deposits and corrosion.
  • Dry completely before sterilization or storage, paying special attention to hinges, joints, and serrations where moisture can accumulate.
  • Lubricate hinged and moving instruments regularly with a medical-grade, steam-permeable instrument lubricant to ensure smooth operation.
  • Sterilize using validated autoclave procedures or other approved sterilization methods according to healthcare facility protocols and the instrument’s intended use.
  • Store instruments in a clean, dry environment with tips and cutting edges protected from impact or contact with other instruments.
  • Inspect instruments before each use for wear, corrosion, misalignment, or damage. Remove any defective instrument from service until repaired or replaced.
  • Do not expose stainless steel instruments to bleach, strong acids, high-chloride solutions, or prolonged soaking, as these may cause staining, pitting, or corrosion.
  • Use each instrument only for its intended purpose to preserve precision, functionality, and patient safety.
